MEET THE ARTISAN

Fast forward several decades and nothing has changed. I still love baking and crafting, but teaching, tutoring, and attending classes left me little to no time to enjoy either hobby. In 2012 the pain from severe scoliosis, which was caused by a birth defect called Arnold Chiari Malformation, required a lumbar spinal fusion involving my entire spine and both hips.

After a week’s stay in the hospital, six weeks of rehabilitation at a skilled nursing facility, and a one year leave of absence from my teaching position, I was still unable to return to teaching. The after-effects of surgery, in addition to the Arnold Chiari disability and right-sided partial paralysis, would make returning to the classroom that soon, impossible. Subsequently and sadly, I was asked to resign.

Looking for a way to stay active and to work on Activities of Daily Living (as prescribed by my occupational therapist) I started baking again - with a LOT of help from my husband. During the same time, my beloved Aunt Peachie requested I stay in touch the old-fashioned way - write a real letter! No e-mails, texting, or social network posting, but a real letter. That inspired me to make my own envelopes. One thing led to another and suddenly I was knee deep in the wonderful world of paper crafting.

After many months of blissfully baking, crafting like the Mad Hatter, and of family and friends encouraging me to start a business, I decided to take their advice, follow my passion, and start an online business incorporating both hobbies - and Baked Paper was created.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out - life happens. Destiny? Serendipity? Fate? GOD.
